Future-proof apprenticeship - Apprentices build robots in idyllic Forstau

In the middle of Pongau nature in Forstau, apprentices learn how to work with robots.

FORSTAU. "The commute to Forstau pays off," says 18-year-old apprentice Tobias Mandl from Gröbming. He has chosen the apprenticeship mechatronics with the special module robotics: Hardly anyone suspects that you can learn about robotics in Forstau, surrounded by nature with a view of the Dachstein.

Profession with future: robotics

"Robotics sounds quite interesting," thought 27-year-old Christoph Knaus when he decided to take the special module in robotics. The Schladming native has already completed the apprenticeship. You learn the basics of robotics, how to operate robots and what robots can do. If you are prepared to learn a lot yourself, the special module can be very enriching.

Joel Kocher is still waiting for the special robotics module in the fourth year of his apprenticeship. He believes that robotics will become more and more in demand in the next few years. "A robot is faster than a human, doesn't need holidays, doesn't get sick," says the 19-year-old apprentice. Robots have been used at Alba Industries for many years. For example, a robot mixes chemical substances in the right proportions to make filling material for car seats.

"It's very versatile"

The fact that the special robotics module is offered at Alba Industries was not the main reason for Christoph Knaus, Joel Kocher and Tobias Mandl to choose a mechatronics apprenticeship. All three were interested in technology from an early age.

"I also like to deal with electrics and mechanics and like to build computers," says 18-year-old Tobias Mandl. The fact that mechatronics is a profession of the future would also have contributed to their decision to do an apprenticeship. "I looked at which professions would have a lot of work in the future. Mechatronics technician was way ahead of the pack," says Kocher.

From eight to 400 employees

It is thanks to company founder Helmut Naue that there are robots in Forstau. In the meantime, the company has become a family business under the leadership of Anton Naue in the third generation, has more than 400 employees, eight locations and customers from all over the world. The international networking of the company is also what employee Christoph Knaus likes about working at Alba Industries.

"I've already done assembly work in Slovakia and Germany," says the Schladming native. In the future, Alba Industries will also focus more on environmental technology and medical technology. The energy and climate crisis shows that the automotive industry alone is no longer sufficient; one must move with the times and remain dynamic.

Industry for industry

It often seems to be forgotten that industry also needs an industry that produces its own machines: This is the task that Alba Industries has set itself. For international customers, individual tools, machines and plants are currently still mainly manufactured for the automotive industry.

The 27-year-old Christoph Knaus is particularly enthusiastic about special machine construction and the fact that individual solutions are developed for customers. This way you get to see all the work steps from planning to the finished product. This is not the case in larger companies with serial production. This also makes the work versatile.
